Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and its release to the atmosphere must be avoided. Hence, when methane is not used for generating thermal/electrical energy it must be treated. María Fernanda Ortiz is investigating the anoxic process where methane is the electron donor and nitrate is the electron acceptor. María Fernanda is focused on understanding fundamental aspects of the process such as the specific role of archaea and bacteria, and the conditions triggering N2O accumulation.
